Gratitude is a Simple, But Beautiful Thing

 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things."                                                    Philippians 4:8 

“Look on the bright side…”

“Have an attitude of gratitude…”

“Every cloud has a silver lining…”

All these expressions can seem trite, a little Pollyanna, unrealistic. But the truth is being grateful is down right good for you! According to studies, those who keep gratitude journals experience these health benefits:

1. Progress toward reaching academic, health, and interpersonal goals.
2. More and better sleep.
3. Improved relationships among couples.
4. Less aggression.
5. Happier and more satisfactory lives.

And you know, Father knows best. So it’s not surprising that being thankful is right in line with God’s Word too.

 " give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1Thessalonians 5:18

I don’t keep a gratitude journal, but I’m thinking I just might.
And for today, I’ll start my list right here:

1. I’m thankful for the magnificence of fall, the vibrant colors, the crisp air, the musky scent.
2. I’m thankful that 18 years ago tomorrow, my beloved Amelia was born at 10 lbs. 15 oz., 23” long, with a full head of wild red hair.
3. I’m thankful that all my kids are doing well, healthy, have fulfilling jobs, and are safe.
4. I’m thankful that I get to work with college-bound kids, helping them feel a little better, a little less anxious in the midst of this very stressful time in their lives.
5. I’m thankful for my husband who ran my power point, ran off last minute copies, and supported me throughout the essay workshop today.

There’s so much more I"m thankful for. But it’s a start!

  1. I used to keep a gratitude journal, although its been a while. Good idea to start again
    I am grateful the kids are outside playing so I can sit on the couch and dose off as my husband sits besides me and watches football.
