Simple, But Beautiful Fall
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:"
Today as my husband, Chris, and I walked, I was feeling a little blue. Cranky. Don't know why...
We started praying, as we do normally on our walks. We use the 4 Steps of Prayer - Praise, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Intercession to guide our prayers. As usual, our Confession was silent.
And the pause went on for a while. "All done?" I asked Chris.
"Yes...I had a childhood memory brought on by the acorns."
I related to his memory...Oh yes! Acorns, turning leaves, pine cones, flowers drying. Signs of the changing seasons. It's officially Fall. And I don't want to miss it.
When you have young kids, they're so observant. You can't help but notice things you otherwise might miss.
We used to go on little scavenger hunts this time of year. My gaggle of girls and I. We'd walk the block to find Fall treasures, carrying them along in brown paper bags. Then we'd bring them home and glue the autumn splendor to a yellow, red, brown, orange construction paper background.
So simple, but beautiful these little signs of Fall. So natural, so splendid. So easy to miss, whisk by on my way.
And so, I picked up my little Fall treasures today - yellow, red, mottled colorful leaves, acorns, berries, flowers, pine cones. And I carried them home. Then I arranged them on a bright yellow napkin background. And I marveled at this simple, but beautiful display.
I hope not to miss the things going forward that were magnified with the innocence and purity of youth.
* The color, scent, crunch, and shift of Fall.
* The glory of Winter...Snow Day! Snowmen, snowflakes - no two alike, catching flakes with my tongue, blurry snowy vision.
* The budding of Spring new life everywhere--flowers, grass, leaves, fragrance of lilac, lengthening days.
* The swelter of August, relief through an icy cold plunge, sudden rain, welcoming sea, hot sand, and Good Humor.
The changing seasons...Simple, but beautiful!
How do you celebrate Fall? What simple, but beautiful thought, moment, thing struck you today?
